Teaching and study formats

The University of Gothenburg is well-known for its open and welcoming atmosphere. Students, teaching staff and professors work together in close and informal cooperation, where students are expected to contribute with ideas and opinions.

Students at the University are in control of their own studies, which are largely carried out by working in small groups and on specific projects.cts.

Teaching and timetables

The structure of timetabled teaching varies from course to course. The weekly number of timetabled hours varies as well, from just a few hours a week to a good part of the week. The teacher-led learning consists of everything from lectures in large groups to individual supervision.

Teacher-led education is primarily intended to support and complement the course literature that you are expected to read on your own.

Study Formats

Lectures

Lectures represent the teaching format most commonly associated with education at universities and university colleges. In principle, these are similar to lessons (see below) but involve a larger number of students. The lecturer usually deals with course material that needs to be expanded or commented on.

Lessons

The difference between a lesson and a traditional lecture is that the number of students is a little more manageable (around 30 students). Lessons therefore enable students to more actively participate in discussions and go deeper into the course material.

Seminars

There are several kinds of seminars. What they all have in common is that students actively participate. Seminars often involve student presentations of assignments and dissertations. Sometimes a student will serve as a discussant and critically review another student's results and presentation.

Laboratory work

Tasks of a more experimental nature are carried out either in small groups or at the individual level. Teaching staff provide supervision, but students themselves complete the tasks and then present a report, usually in writing.

Group work

Here, a smaller group of students work together on a question or a specific task. A member of the teaching staff is often available, but the work should mainly be carried out within the group. The results are reported in writing and/or orally. As a general rule, participation in seminars, laboratory work and group work is mandatory if they are included in a course.

Supervision

Supervision takes place either individually or in a small group and may be provided as part of a thesis project, a report or various in-depth modules. The supervisor can discuss structure, planning as well as issues specific to your work.

Excellent Teachers

The University of Gothenburg has introduced the title Excellent Teacher as a way to highlight teachers with excellent pedagogical proficiency.

Every year students can nominate teachers to recive a Pedagogical Prize at the Academic Ceremoney.
