Om programmet

The Master's Programme in European Studies (two years) provides advanced knowledge and analytical skills relevant to different aspects of European developments, with a special emphasis on the European Union enlargement and integration processes. The programme is inter- and multidisciplinary and addresses a broad range of topics within the field of European studies including legal, political, economic and social aspects of contemporary European developments and integration. One term is dedicated to internship or elective courses. The programme has a history of students pursuing successful internships at EU-institutions, the United Nations, Foreign ministries, and other public or private organisations and companies.The programme equips students with the analytical skills to assess European actors involved in the integration process, implications of EU policy, as well as to formulate strategies to operate effectively in the European arena, i.e. knowledge and skills needed for both professional careers and post-graduate research. The programme consists of the following courses:

  • Term 1: European Integration: Current Research and Theory (core course, 15 hec) and Integrating European Market (core course, 15 hec)
  • Term 2: Central- and Eastern Europe: Fully European or the European ‘Other’? (15 hec) and Elective courses or internship (30 hec) Elective courses or internship (30 hec)
  • Term 3: Social Europe or European Environment and Energy or Europe in the World (semi-elective courses, 15 hec) and Research Methods (15 hec)
  • Term 4: Master's Thesis (30 hec)


During the fall term of the first year of the programme, students can apply for the Double Degree Programme with Fudan University. If accepted, the student would complete their second year in its entirety at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University in Shanghai, and receive a master’s degree from both universities.

Note that you need to submit both your CV and Statement of intent in order for your application to be considered.

Behörighet och urval

Förkunskapskrav: A Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 90 higher education credits (hec) in a social science discipline. Students at the Law programme are also eligible to apply to the Master's Programme, after three years 180 hec equivalent of a bachelor degree. English 6/English B or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.

Urval: Urvalet baseras på inskickat CV och motivationsbrev. Du måste använda den specifika mallen som är tillgänglig på http://pol.gu.se/Utbildning/centrum-for-europastudier--ces-/europeanstudies/forkunskapskrav-och-urval. Förtur ges till studenter med minst 60 hp i Europakunskap.
