Deferment of studies

If you are admitted to a course or programme and want to delay starting your studies, you can apply for deferment of studies.

Permission of deferment of studies is usually granted for the next time the programme is offered, usually in the next academic year, and no longer than 18 months unless there are special circumstances that require longer time.

Reasons for deferment of studies

Deferment of studies may be granted if there are exceptional circumstances. In the regulations of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, it is stated that the reasons for deferment of studies or academic leave may entail social, medical or other particular circumstances, e.g.

  • care of child
  • military service – including basic military education and time-limited trial period service in the Armed Forces
  • student union assignment
  • denied leave of absence for studies from your employer.

Deferment of studies cannot be granted for reasons concerning housing/accommodation or your current economic situation. Before you apply for deferment you must accept your offer as stated in the notification of selection results. Students who are obliged to pay tuition fees have to pay the first instalment of tuition before an application of deferment of studies will be assessed. If your application for deferment is denied, the payment will be refunded.

Application for deferment of studies

You must submit proof of the reasons for deferment. Certified copies of official documents that supports the circumstances of your case must be submitted. You should also write a letter in which you describe your situation.
