About the Programme

The Academy of Music and Drama (HSM) at the University of Gothenburg in collaboration with Gothenburg Symphony (the National Orchestra of Sweden) have launched a unique two-year Master´s Degree programme in orchestra studies. From Autumn 2015 this Programme also includes pianists.

The students on the programme make up a full orchestra, the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra forms the foundation for this international Master´s Degree programme aimed at top-ranking students from Europe and the rest of the world. This programme offers musicians a unique combination of highly focused orchestral training, music coaching and a wealth of opportunities to perform in concert.

The main areas of focus are: Orchestral concert productions covering all periods from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods to music of the late 20th century; Also Opera repertoire, Repertoire training, Mock auditions, Interpretation, Individual coaching, Chamber music and Independent Project.

The programme is based on collaboration between HSM, Gothenburg Symphony, GöteborgsOperan and the Departments of Opera and Composition at our Academy, in order to offer the basic repertoire of the professional orchestral musician.

Upon completion of this full-time two-year programme the student will be awarded a Master´s Degree. The programme also prepares students to apply for postgraduate positions. The programme is given in English and admits new students twice a year.
