About the Course

This course is about methodologies used in the area of environmental sciences. The course should also specifically prepare the students for the examination course, in order to secure the depth of the future examination project.
The course consists of three subparts:
1) The student should obtain knowledge and practical skills about; Environmental management systems, Life cycle analysis, and Environmental impact assessment.

2) Four important case studies will be carried out, each one presenting an advanced and commonly used methodology. Environmental monitoring methodology and the use of monitoring data for studying time series and judging the state of the environment will be one of the cases. Ecological risk assesments, multiple criteria analysis, extinction risk analysis are other examples of methods that can be the scope for a case study week. Each of the cases studies include;
i) finding relevant literature from international journals;
ii) lectures;
iii) an excersise, e.g. processing of realistic data.
iv) the students are analysing the method in a broader context, e.g. its relation to other methods and practical usage of the method.

3) The student should carry out a pilot study as a preparation for the examination work. The student can test methods, map the literature, work with formulation of the research questions and issues that the examination work will address

Requirements and Selection

Requirements: 180 credits out of which at least 120 credits are in natural science (biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental science-natural science, physics) or technology, and at least 15 credits in environmental science-natural science. Students with equivalent education can be allowed to enter the course. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS. 

Selection: Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 225 credits.
