About the Course

The course gives you an introduction to the systematic comparative study of languages representing different language families ​​and structural types. The course provides you with a basic understanding of recurring patterns in different language systems as well as hypotheses about the unity, diversity, possibilities and limitations of human language. The course introduces language ​​universals and diversity in the following domains: phonology and morphology, syntax and information structure. The course also gives you an introduction to the basic theories of language ​​relationship from a synchronic and diachronic perspective.

Important additional information for the 2020 autumn semester in connection to the corona pandemic: If teaching and examination cannot be conducted on campus, campus courses will be offered in an online format instead.

Requirements and Selection

Requirements: The requirement for admission to the course is a Bachelor s degree or its equivalent.

Selection: Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 225 credits.

Application fee: 900 SEK
Full course cost: 10 750 SEK
First payment: 10 750 SEK
