About the Course

In the course you will study how and why genomes change as a function of time and shifts in the environment, such the use of antibiotics, climate change or breeding for desired characteristics. The course will give you a thorough molecular understanding of the forces acting on genome content and organization and allow you to make evolutionary and functional interpretations and predictions of genetic variations between individuals. Tools learned include the analysis of linkage and genome-wide associations and the use of experimental and directed evolution to mold life into desired forms. Key subjects are molecular evolution, evolutionary and comparative genomics, population genomics and genetic epidemiology. The course is taught in English.

Requirements and Selection

Requirements: Passed basic courses in Biology 75 credits (BIO900 Cell Biology, BIO905 Molecular Genetics, BIO910 Biological form and function, BIO915 Ecology and Evolution and BIO920 Biodiversity and Systematics) and completion of Chemistry 30 credits. In addition you need at least one approved advanced level course in biology, 15 credits. The courses BIO406 Advanced Functional genomics, BIO403 Advanced Bioinformatics, BIO555 Genetics or BIO210 Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics is recommended, and at least 30 credits in Chemistry. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.

Selection: Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 225 credits.
