About the Course

The course discusses central concepts, theories and perspectives to understand conflicts in the global order. The first part is founded on three essential concepts: war, peace and security and their significance and development within International Relations. It will also cover different causes and expressions for organised crime, terrorism and conflicts in the international system, in relation to matters as identity, gender, access to resources, globalisation, social and political integration, militarisation and global power structures. The occurrence of conflicts and altered conflict patterns during the period after the Cold War is related to International Law and the creation and development of the UN systems, as well as to different attempts to achieve peace and security through non-violent strategies, mediation or international interventions.

The second part of the course focuses on global and structural political-economic relations, the growth of the world economic system and causes of global inequality, as well as the conditions for what sometimes is referred to as structural violence. This part comprises an introduction to the global political economy (GPE) and the critical political economy as a perspective and framework to understand our current global order, its provisions and its historical growth. The course aims to give an introduction and overview of the prevailing world order and global political-economic relations and history as well as to give an introduction and overview of the theoretical perspectives and concepts within GPE. The course gives a view of the 20th Century’s political-economic history with emphasis on the period after the Second World War, with a special focus on modern conflicts and crises within global political economy.
