About the Course

The course addresses foreign students with the aim of enlarging their knowledge of the Swedish and Scandinavian society from historical, cultural and social perspectives. It gives an introduction to the historical development in Scandinavia from a European point of view. The course will examine Swedish everyday culture in a broad sense, from the time of the industrial revolution to the present, with the construction of identities as a central issue. Based on current urban research we will focus on the transformation of the city of Gothenburg in a local and global context. The course also provides both a historical and contemporary understanding of consumption in Sweden and Scandinavia, with sociocultural, experiential, symbolic, and ideological aspects of consumption  in focus.
