About the Course

The course consists of 3 sub courses. The teaching is given in the form of lectures, compulsory exercises, seminars and a group project that will be reported both by an oral presentation and a written report. Sub course 1: Theory. The course aims to give the student knowledge in historical, present and future status of climate changes and their influence on society. This part of the course contains basic knowledge on climate reconstruction and climate modelling. A special focus will be given to how the society uses climate scenarios to plan for adaptations to a changed climate, the connections between land use and climate as well as the processes that cause land use changes in developing countries Sub course 2: Excursion to China. The students will work with different topics related to the course from a foreign perspective during approximately two weeks. There will be a special focus on the connections between land use and climate as well as the processes that cause land use change in developing countries. Sub course 3: Project work. The project work, in groups, is based on two case studies of how a city or region plans for a changed climate, the data and knowledge collected during sub course 1 and 2 is used as a base for this work and presented in a written report an in an oral presentation. Each sub course gives 5 HEC. For sub course 1 and 3 you can receive the grades U (not passed) or G (pass). For sub course 2 you can receive the grades U (not passed), G (pass) or VG (pass with distinction).

Requirements and Selection

Requirements: 60 credits either in geoscience, geography, environmental science or equivalent. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.

Selection: Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 225 credits.
