Digital Religion and Popular Culture

About the Course

Today’s religion is increasingly medialized, and new digital media have transformed religions in ways and at a rate that has been rarely seen. The return of religion and spirituality is evident in contemporary popular culture such as movies, games and books. The course addresses relationships between religion, digital media and popular culture based on current research in the field. Central concepts such as popular culture and digital religion are presented and discussed. Throughout the course, interaction between religious traditions and groups, digital media and popular culture is highlighted, and the latter’s contribution to religious change is emphasized.
