About the Course

Contemporary research and practice demonstrate that digitalization changes the basic premises of innovation in many industries. Mass markets, dominated by volume products, are rapidly turning into a mass of niches, allowing for variety and multiplicity. Rather than being an output from corporate R&D departments, this variety derives from inherently distributed innovation activities, taking place in loosely coupled networks or ecosystems. These ecosystems tend to revolve around digital platforms. In contrast to traditional, modular product platforms, such a digital platform allows for distributed networks to pursue unconstrained combinatorial innovation by gluing elements from different layers using a set of protocols and standards to create alternative digital products.

This course focuses on the different challenges facing industrial organizations as they seek to capitalize on digital technology. It offers (1) an overview of inherent tensions between industrial innovation and digital innovation, (2) explores some fundamental properties of digital technology, and (3) outlines alternative strategies for building sustainable digital innovation practices in industrial settings.
