About the Course

This course – individual project work addressing “humour in dark times” - is an opportunity to pursue an investigative artistic project under the broad heading of “humour in dark times” for people working through fine art, photography, film, curating and related arts practices.

During the course you will have an opportunity to explore notions of humour, comedy, laughter, the comic, the unfunny-funny, the uncanny, the witty, the sarcastic, and many other variations on the question of humour in dark times. Humour can be approached as a matter of resistance, of self-preservation, of destruction, of complicity of scape-goating, of escape, of self-mockery, of salvation, of community, and many other ways. Is humour a guide for times of insecurity, radical change, political turmoil? Is humour a form of retreat and escape from the world? Or is it a way to renew, remake and re-imagine?

The course is primarily targeted at students with ongoing studies – i.e., student who have started a programme of artistic education but not yet finished. The course consists of student presentations, lectures, seminars, critique sessions, independent practice, and key readings. Successful applicants will be expected to present their project proposals in group-sessions in the first weeks of the course. Over the summer there will be three key stages where work-in-progress is presented in group-critique sessions.

The teachers on the course are Prof. Leslie Johnson with Mick Wilson and invited guests.
