About the Programme

Do you want to be part of a master’s program that is situated in a vibrant multidisciplinary academic environment and has the following unique qualities?

  • Address a broad range of topics within the field of European studies, including political, historical, ideational, cultural, economic and social aspects of contemporary Europe

  • Add to your studies, socially as well as intellectually, by participating in the exciting extracurricular activities such as within the student-led lunch-lecture organization Brännpunkt Europa 

For your application to be considered, you need to meet the formal requirements (see below) as well as submit a CV and a Statement of intent. Please use the Statement of Intent form that you can find at our Entrance Requirements and Selection page.

The Social Science Track consists of the following courses:

Term 1: European Identity and Heritage (10 credits) AND European Integration: Current Research and Theory (10 credits) AND Integrating European Markets (10 credits).

Term 2: Elective courses in Sweden or abroad, or an internship (15 or 30 credits). We suggest Central- and Eastern Europe: Fully European or the European ‘Other’? (15 credits).

Term 3: Social Europe OR European Environment OR Europe in the World (15 credits) AND Research Methods (your choice of four methods courses, 15 credits).

Term 4: Master’s Thesis (30 credits).

During the fall term of the first year of the Social Science Track, students can apply for the Double Degree Track with Fudan University, (apply in December). If accepted, the student will complete their second year in its entirety at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University in Shanghai, and receive a master’s degree from both universities.

You can apply to all four tracks of our Master’s Programme in European Studies:

  • The Social Science Track
  • The Humanities Track
  • The Double Degree Track  with Konstanz University in Germany
  • The Double Degree Track  with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States

Requirements and Selection

Requirements: A Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 90 credits in consecutive courses in a social science discipline such as Business Administration, Economic Geography, Economic History, Economics, European Studies, Human Geography, International Relations, Media and Communication, Sociology, Social Work, Political Science, Public Administration or equivalent, or 90 credits in consecutive courses in a humanities discipline such as Cultural Sciences, History, History of Ideas, Philosophy, Religious Studies or equivalent. Students at the Law Programme are also eligible to apply to the Master's Programme, after three years 180 credits equivalent of a bachelor degree. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.

Selection: The selection is based on the submitted CV and Statement of Intent. Use the assigned form available on CV and Statement of Intent shall be uploaded on no later than Feb 1 (admission round Jan 15) and May 2 (admission round April 15). Priority will be given to those with at least 60 credits in European studies.

Application fee: 900 SEK
Full programme cost: 170 000 SEK
First payment: 42 500 SEK
