About the Programme

Do you want to work with global challenges such as climate change, management of natural resources and sustainable food production for a growing world population? If so, you should apply for the master program in biology! Our three strongly research-based profiles ecophysiology, evolutionary biology and conservation biology gives you not only tools and competence to compete on the job market, but are also an excellent preparation for graduate studies in biology.

Areas of employment

Biologists work in many different areas with diverse tasks depending on the profile of their biology education. Examples of employers outside the academy where former Biology students from the University of Gothenburg work are: county administrative boards, local councils, Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, Swedish Board of Agriculture, Science parks like Universeum as well as Astra Zeneca and other pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

Program description

The program gives you the opportunity for in-depth studies in one of the profiles ecophysiology, evolutionary biology or conservation biology. Each profile contains recommended courses (see list below), but you can also widen your studies by choosing other electable in-depth courses in biology or other suitable subjects.

Recommended courses

Each profile starts with one or two introductory courses that offer a broad introduction to the field at the advanced level.  A series of recommended core courses that constitutes deepening and progression within the profile during the first year follows. For the second year a 60 hp degree project is recommended, but it is also a possibility to do a 30 or 45 hp project in combinations with other courses.

Ecophysiology

Autumn period 1: ES2613 Global change - problem, analysis, measures , 7,5 hp and BIO408 An introduction to ecophysiology - plants and animals , 7,5 hp

Autumn period 2: BIO484 Comparative Physiology of Marine Animals including Applications for Aquaculture 15 hp

Spring period 1: BIO560 Animal ecophysiology from a climate perspective , 15 hp

Spring period 2: BIO506 Plant ecophysiology in a global change perspective , 15 hp

HT period 2: BIO418 Conservation and the genetics of populations, 15 hp

VT period 1: BIO210 Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, 15 hp or BIO209 Behavioral Biology, 15 hp

VT period 2: BIO442 Evolutionary Genomics, 15 hp
