A Proper Welcome for New Students

NEWS: Mar 14, 2019

After the international students have all arrived for the spring semester and gotten the essential information about living and studying in Gothenburg, and even had time to start their studies, it’s time for a proper welcome were the students get the chance to enjoy themselves. Thus, on February 12, the Welcome Reception was held at Universeum.

Universeum is a science centre in central Gothenburg that was co-founded by the University of Gothenburg, the Chalmers University of Technology, the West Sweden Chamber of Commerce and the Gothenburg Region, and was inaugurated in 2001. It houses, among other things, an indoor rainforest, an aquarium, a reptile hall and a variety of experiment workshops focused on, for instance, the human body, chemistry and space travel.

During the Welcome Reception the attending students were first treated some light refreshments to make sure that nobody would have to explore the science centre on an empty stomach. After having some time to eat and socialize the Lord Mayor of Gothenburg, Anneli Rhedin, held a welcome speech to greet the students.
“We’re proud of our city which has universities and colleges that maintain a high quality of education, even during times with increasing competition,” she proclaimed during her speech, after saying how she feels that Gothenburg is a city which is really easy to like.

After the Lord Mayor’s speech the students were welcome to freely roam Universeum, which was closed to the public during the event. Guides were present, and helped show the students around the different sections and exhibits, answering any, and all, questions along the way. The students got the chance the take a walk in the rainforest, look at the sharks and other fish in the aquarium, explore the space exhibition, try virtual reality and other new technology, test their endurance, reactivity and their knowledge about human biology, and much more. At 10 pm the last students collected their winter jackets and left Universeum, concluding the Welcome Programme of the spring semester 2019.
