Welcome Programme

The International Student Welcome Programme is held at the beginning of each semester. The programme of events and activities provides international students with practical information about the University and living in Gothenburg. It is also a perfect opportunity to meet other international students and Student Buddies from all over the world.

Welcome Programme Autumn 2018

Saturday 25 August and Tuesday 28 August:

Arrival Day, Pickup service and welcome pack

We organise a pickup service from the airport, train station, bus and ferry terminals. Staff from the University and Student Buddies from the student unions will welcome you to Gothenburg and guide you through the day.

Welcome packs will be handed out on the Arrival Days (25 and 28 August) as well as during the fair on 30 August. Details on where you can pick up your Welcome pack if you arrive after 30 August will appear here closer to the start of the atutumn semester.

Wednesday 29 August: Welcome Day

The University of Gothenburg formally welcomes you to the University and the start of the Autumn 2018 semester. We will introduce you to the University and present an array of services and activities that are available to you. Thereafter you will learn more about Sweden and the Swedes. The day finishes with a panel discussion with current Swedish and international students, who share their insights into student life in Gothenburg. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the panel on stage.

Thursday 30 August: Fair and Information Day

Time: Closer to the Arrival Days you will receive a ticket via email to a designated group for the day. Depending on your group the time of the Fair and the Practical Information Session will be different. If you haven’t received an email by 20 August, please send an email to welcomeprogramme@gu.se

Fair and informationsessions

  • Practical information (mandatory), covering health care, insurances, Swedish language courses, Mecenat student discounts, Student Housing (exchange students), Swedish civic registration number (degree students), and more.
  • University Library (optional), covering the many services offered by the University Library. Read more about the University Library.
  • Travel in Sweden (optional), covering travel in Sweden and to neighbouring countries as well as ideas on where to go while you are in Sweden.

At the fair, you will meet University staff, student organisations as well as other exhibitors who will answer your questions and help you
become familiar with the University and Gothenburg. The full programme, including details such as an exhibitor list and map, will be published closer to the date.

Welcome packs

The Welcome pack includes maps, University information, a SIM card (standard, micro, nano), a bucket list, information about public transport, and much more. We will hand them out on the Arrival Days (25 and 28 August) as well as during the fair on 30 August. Details on where you can pick up your Welcome pack if you arrive after 30 August will appear here closer to the start of the atutumn semester.

Your faculty and department may organise additional events and orientation gatherings not mentioned here. For more information about events organised by your faculty, please contact your department.

Welcome Reception hosted by the City of Gothenburg

The City of Gothenburg invites new international students to a welcome reception. This popular mingle event includes a welcome speech by the lord mayor, food, drinks, and of course an excellent chance to spend a beautiful evening with fellow students.

Date: 17 September
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Universeum
Tickets: Bring valid photo ID and your ticket. Invitations will be e-mailed to you sometime in August.

Student Buddies activities

The Student Buddies organise plenty of activities both at the start and throughout the semester in order to help international students settle in and meet fellow students. You can contact them if you need more information about student life in Gothenburg or if you want to know more about the different activities arranged for you.

Student Göteborg events

The Student Göteborg events aim to welcome all new students, local and international, to the city of Gothenburg. The different events and activities are designed to make you discover and experience the city while getting to know other students in a relaxed and fun way.
