Private housing

Students can apply for a room in a privately owned property or in a rented flat. Properties can vary considerably, from rooms or small flats to houses.

You can either apply to be a lodger, i.e. renting a private room in someone’s home or you can apply to rent a property alone or with other people. Many new students start their semester renting a private room.

Boplats Göteborg – Private rooms

Boplats Göteborg is a marketplace that advertises private rooms and flats. At Boplats, international students can find ads for private rooms. Please note that many more ads are available during the summer months.

  • General information about housing in Gothenburg.
  • How to avoid fraud.
  • How to apply for private rooms.

Before the autumn semester starts two housing coordinators will be available to assist you in your search for a room. They can help you with the following between June and September:

  • Give you general information about housing in Gothenburg;
  • Support you in your search for accommodation;
  • Assist you when you apply for private rooms at;
  • Tell you how to avoid accommodation fraud and questions concerning specific offers;
  • Provide you with tenancy agreements, and other helpful materials.

Other alternatives – sublet a student room from a local student

When local students decide to temporarily leave Gothenburg, for example to study or do an internship abroad, they often rent out their room or flat for the period they are not here. The HousingAnywhere platform gives you access to the ads for rooms that these students publish.

Using HousingAnywhere is free of charge. This is how you use it:

  1. Enter the website and search for Sweden / Gothenburg.
  2. Look through the alternatives available (note that this is a new agreement and more flats and rooms will hopefully be added as our Swedish students upload their vacancies).
  3. Choose the alternatives you like the most and send a request to the advertiser (through a contact form).
  4. It is up to the advertiser to choose who will be the new tenant.

Valuable tips when it comes to private rooms

Beware of scams

Just like everywhere else, it happens that fictive landlords try to trick you. You should therefore be aware of ‘too good to be true’ offers. Also, make sure you

  • Never transfer a deposit to the landlord until you or a friend has actually seen the lease and place;
  • Insist on having a written leasing contract when you agree with a landlord to let or sublet a room/flat;
  • Use one of the authorized leasing contracts. Boplats can assist in all matters concerning the rental of a private room.
