Academic calendar

The academic year in Sweden is divided into two semesters. The autumn semester usually starts in September and the spring semester starts in January. This page shows the official semester dates, breaks, and public holidays.

The academic year in Sweden is divided into two semesters, each lasting 20 weeks.

  • Autumn 2023: 28 August – 14 January
  • Spring 2024: 15 January – 2 June
  • Autumn 2024: 2 September – 19 January
  • Spring 2025: 20 January – 8 June

The exact duration of the semesters may vary slightly from department to department and also from year to year. For this reason, it is advisable to check on the exact dates directly with the department(s) concerned.

Breaks and public holidays

Summer break

When the spring semester ends in June, students get a two and half-month break, until the autumn semester starts. Most students use this time to work at an internship or travel. The University isn’t completely closed; there are summer courses available. There are no official winter or spring breaks beyond public holidays.

Christmas holiday

There is no official Christmas break in the academic calendar. However, in practice there is usually a break from classes around Christmas and New Year’s. The exact dates are determined by each department, so please contact your programme/department for information.

Easter holiday

There is no official Easter break in the academic calendar. However, in practice there is usually a break from classes around public holidays (classes are often informally cancelled on the Thursday before Easter, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are official holidays). The exact dates are determined by each department, so please check with the programme/department to confirm when classes are out.
