"The University of Gothenburg provided me with key skills for my professional life"

I was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, where I took a Bachelor’s degree in International Business and worked for both the public and private sector for four years. I’d been looking for an opportunity to move abroad in order to gain some international experience. I applied to different things, both jobs and graduate programs, but with little success. However, I never gave up and when I finally found an opportunity I didn’t let it go to waste.

In 2015 I finally got the chance to work in the Congressional Affairs Office at the Embassy of Mexico in Washington D.C. That is where my journey started. One day I attended a public hearing organized by the members of the U.S. Congress called China’s Advance in Latin America and the Caribbean. I found the information shared there so fascinating that I decided to apply to study a Master’s degree in China.

One year later, I was starting my studies at a Master’s program in International Public Policy at Fudan University in Shanghai. I learned a lot there, not only about Chinese politics and policy-making process but also about their culture and language. China and the U.S. seem to me like two faces of the same coin so having the opportunity to work and study in these two countries certainly enriched my perception of the world.

First-hand experience of Sweden

Like China, Sweden caught my interest during a lecture. In the first year of my studies in Shanghai, I attended a lecture arranged by the Swedish Consulate. I was so intrigued by the information about the quality of life in Sweden addressed during the lecture that I wanted some first-hand experience of this country.

I found the program in Political Science at the University of Gothenburg which fitted my academic goals perfectly. Through an exchange collaboration between Fudan University and the University of Gothenburg I got the opportunity to study for a double degree. I was so certain of my decision that when I had my application interview, it felt like both Fudan University and the University of Gothenburg had no other choice than accepting me.

Think independently

Looking back I can see that studying at the University of Gothenburg provided me with key skills for my professional life. Here everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and opinions, and to think independently, creatively and critically. At the University of Gothenburg, I shaped my ability to question the status-quo by assessing information, seeking new perspectives and coming up with well-informed opinions.

The Global Swede Award

In 2018 I was nominated for the Global Swede award, an award given to international students studying in Sweden. The award is a great achievement in my life. It made me look back to when I decided to leave Tijuana in order to find new challenges, experiences, and opportunities. Not everything has been easy and fun since that day. It has represented a great effort, hard work and two years apart from my family and friends. However, the Global Swede Award also made me remember that following your dreams will definitely pay-off in the end.

What do you like?

Everyone speaks English

When I first arrived in Gothenburg, I was so impressed with the fact that everyone, literally, everyone speaks English here. I’ve been able to use English with everyone I’ve met, from classmates to bus drivers.

Well prepared for international students

The University of Gothenburg is well-adapted to the needs of international students. Information regarding how and when to do something is clear enough, but if any question remains, there is always someone happy to help you.
