"I followed my heart to Gothenburg"

I first came to Sweden in 2012 through the Erasmus exchange programme. I immediately liked the country, and during my stay I also met a girl. We didn’t really talk a lot when I was studying here, but kept in touch after my Erasmus programme when I went back home to the Netherlands.

After my time in Sweden, she visited me in the Netherlands and we got together and had a long- distance relationship for over a year. I decided to do my Master’s Programme in Sweden to give our relationship a real chance to grow.

No fees and no other major administrative hurdles made it easy for me to start looking for a suitable programme. I was admitted to the Master’s in Communication Programme and decided to move to Sweden. I left behind everything I’d built up, all my friends and family, in order to start something new.

Be the person you truly are

Wesley Overklift

I took several courses and did a double Master’s degree at different parts of the University. It was really interesting to see that as soon as you walked into a new building, you saw different types of people. The way they behaved, dressed and talked. It was like moving into a new social circle every time.

I felt like you could really be who you are in each of these environments, which helped me integrate by learning from these different groups. I especially liked hanging out with Swedish people, because they would help me with the Swedish language and how society works.

Starting a new business

During my studies I took what I learnt in school and combined it with my passion for photography, in order to start my own business. It was very easy to set up the company. I’ve never started a business in the Netherlands, but I know certain things would be much more di cult to do there.

Staying in Gothenburg

Wesley OverkliftI truly believe that if it wasn’t for the hospitality of the University, among others, the relationship between me and my girlfriend might never have survived.

Now I’ve just graduated and I’ve found a job here in Gothenburg as a branding strategist. It ts well with my interests and educational background. So it seems like I’m staying in Gothenburg, a city that’s close to the sea one side and has a lot of nature on the other. And the city was once built with the help of Dutch people, so this is my home away from home!

What do you like?

Everyone speaks English

Sweden regularly ranks as one of the top countries in the world for non-native speakers of English. That means that you don’t have to speak any Swedish to study here. Many Swedish multinational organisations even have English as their corporate language.

The nature and right of public access

When you are in Sweden you have the right to walk, cycle, ride and ski on any land, with few exceptions. You are free to fish and to pick flowers, berries and mushrooms, and you may even pitch your tent in the countryside. We call it the Right to Roam. So take the opportunity to go and discover Sweden’s forests, beautiful beaches and snow-capped mountains.

Coming from one of the most densely populated countries in Europe and moving to the vast greens of Sweden, really made me realise how beautiful the wild nature is and how much we should appreciate it. At least every other week my girlfriend and I escape the busy city life to find ourselves in untouched nature - all within an hour. For us, that is a true luxury.
